Goodbye August: A poem

A woman lain across the putrid lines of high school graph paper. Arm propped up by an elbow, she stared at the wall behind the artist. Scraggled lines captured an edged, hard collarbone hanging tits beneath it. A single line traced down the undetailed stomach until hitting a waistband. Half naked, vulnerable, a woman who so desperately wanted to be in love. Light Light Light. My finger scraped the ridged wheel of the lighter, rusted and old lighter, rusted and old lighter that refused to endure my closure. When the flame finally stopped fighting me. I burned myself. Fire encapsulating my body into embers. Ugly lines faded away with the foolish, young artist. Heat overwhelmed us as the flame consumed faster than I could say goodbye. My scorched hand dropped her into the basin of water. Water and ashes dissolving whatever was left of her. Goodbye to that humid summer, goodbye august.
